In conjounction with the Inter-schools Regatta in the Bay of Islands, was the 29er North Island Championship. A turn of fourteen 29er’s to the venue that will be holding the National Champs that is coming up, made it an excellent opportunity to get to understand the area and grow knowledge.
Harper and I, had a excellent first day on the water. On a fluky, puffy and shifty race course, we sailed the downwind’s generally better than most and that kept us in contention. After day one, we were sitting in 6th position, close in behind 4th and 5th. The photo’s below show us beating the current 29er World Champions after a downwind battle, what an awesome feeling!
Tricky final day on the water, with wind from 12-25+ knots, which made for some pretty interesting racing. Posting a 6, 6, 7, Harper and I stayed positioned in 6th overall. Pleasing to know that we a beginning to dial some speed up on the upwind, we are just learning to do it quickly, so we can maximize our potential gain. The final result is a immense improvement from the last event, being more consistent and mixing it up with the top boats consistently.
