On the 5th, 6th, and 7th of October I raced in the Stack Winter Champs at Murrays Bay Sailing Club.
The conditions looked very light when we arrived at the club in the morning, which continued throughout the day. in the first race I had a good start and picked the perfect course which lead me to 2nd place. The second race didn’t go so well my vang at the front of my boat snapped, I still made a good comeback in the race finishing 7th. In the last race I was winning to the top mark but, unfortunately I was being covered the whole way downwind and finished coming second.
The conditions looked very similar as the day before except towards the end of the day the wind was meant to pick up a little. In the first race of the day I had a not so good start and couldn’t locate the top mark which unfortunately, found me rounding the top mark 8th, and making up two places until the finish. The next race the wind dropped right out which meant I had to be very careful about how I moved around the boat, i also had to check where the tide was strong, because all of those things make a difference as I learnt, I had a 7th in that race. For the last race of the day the wind picked up as predicted. I was sailing smoothly and finally had my head in the game, which was a shame it was the last one of the day. I crossed the line 4th after a slight adjustment was made to the course. I had a lot of making up to do on the next day.
This was the last day of the regatta and I had to get some really good results to make up for my bad results the day before. In the first race I had clear wind on the up wind rounding the first mark 3rd, and then losing places after being cover on the downwind. I was coming 7th after that and had to keep focus to make those places up. There was a change of course which we didn’t realize which slowed some people down, I was quick with my thinking and figured out where the marks had been changed to (this is very confusing but doesn’t happen all the time) after that I took back two places and, stayed in that position for the rest of the race. Race two wasnt so good, I didn’t go to the favoured side of the course which made me finish 7th. The last race of the regatta it all seemed to click I picked the favoured side, I followed the tide, and I wasn’t in anyone’s bad air and, what better way to finish the regatta with a 1st place. Woohoo!
Overall on the results I finished 3rd place overall and 1st girl, which I think was a great comeback after my poor results on the second day.
